About this game

FEAR is a Xbox 360 shooter game centered on combat encounters, area and route exploration, and weapon and firepower management. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while HD video, DVD streaming, surround audio, HDD installs, and television-distance interfaces need to keep action, state, and text readable. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include disc and HDD installation, storage devices, controller batteries, video connections, resolution and frame rate, Kinect space and calibration, and retired online services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

8.1 / 10Xbox 360

Excellent action-horror combat with controller friction.

F.E.A.R. on Xbox 360 retains a potent mixture of gunplay and psychological horror. Slow motion exposes flying debris and enemy movement, but it is more than spectacle: opponents reposition and flank, making each room a fresh problem of cover and distance. A military investigation alternates fierce confrontations with unsettling apparitions, while sound gives both gunfire and unseen threats weight. The console edition retains the main campaign and adds Instant Action, yet a direct Xbox 360 review finds that its complex PC-derived command scheme is somewhat awkward on a gamepad. The added bonus mission contributes less than the central battles. This score belongs to the 2006 Xbox 360 main game; it does not include the two expansions sold separately as F.E.A.R. Files, nor does it assume PC keyboard-and-mouse handling. Players seeking tactical firefights with a horror edge should find a strong experience, provided they can adjust to the busy controller layout.

Strengths

  • Slow-motion gunplay, active enemies and sound design.

Weaknesses

  • Busy gamepad mapping and a weak bonus mission.

Who it is for: Players seeking tactical shooting and psychological horror.

Play notes: Xbox 360 main game, excluding Files expansions.
