About this game

A student has been found dead with a smiling paper bag over his head. As an assistant at the Utsugi Detective Agency, you help police investigate the crime and its connection to the Smiling Man legend. Question the people involved, consult your notes and connect the information you uncover to advance the investigation. You also play as fellow investigator Ayumi Tachibana during parts of the story. Dialogue can highlight words that point toward the next step, and this emphasis can be disabled in the options. Alongside the main investigation, particular moments allow optional conversations and interactions. The central story remains the same, while what you choose to ask or examine can uncover additional exchanges.

7.4 / 10Nintendo Switch

A likely fit for attentive mystery readers who want to investigate within an authored story.

Questioning people and consulting notes can make paying attention to relationships central to the experience. Optional exchanges may reward curiosity about a character even when they do not redirect the main story.

Strengths

  • Moment-specific conversations can give curious questioning a purpose beyond simply moving the case forward.
  • Optional hint emphasis lets players choose how visibly the dialogue points toward progress.

Weaknesses

  • Players seeking to reshape the main storyline may find the shared narrative structure restrictive.

Who it is for: Readers who enjoy comparing testimony, following character relationships and investigating a disturbing fictional case.

Play notes: The opening case concerns a murdered student and imagery associated with a threatening urban legend.
