About this game
Eastward follows John and Sam as they leave underground life for the surface. Their train journey crosses a continent threatened by miasma, with stops in cities, campsites and forests. Exploring these places brings the pair into encounters with people, monsters and environmental puzzles. You control both characters in a single-player adventure. John fights with weapons such as a frying pan and flamethrower; Sam can stun enemies with a kinetic blast. Switching characters lets you combine their abilities in dungeons, while separating them can open hidden paths. Foraged ingredients also become cooked dishes with health or power bonuses. Pixel artwork and modern lighting provide the visual setting for this journey between settlements and dangerous areas.

Nintendo SwitchAI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A journey for players who enjoy a travelling duo and puzzles built around complementary abilities.
John's attacks and Sam's stun power suggest a useful distinction between dealing damage and creating an opening. Character switching and separation can make exploration a question of who should act, rather than simply where to walk.
Strengths
- Distinct combat roles may reward thinking about how the pair works together.
- Separating the protagonists can give environmental puzzles a spatial problem to solve.
Who it is for: Players who like story-led journeys with towns to visit, action encounters and character-switching puzzles.
Play notes: The two protagonists are controlled within a single-player game.
