About this game
Driver 76 is a PSP shooter game centered on aiming and shooting, positioning and evasion, and weapon and firepower management. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while the portable widescreen, UMD streaming, compressed audio, and handheld-scale interface need to preserve targets, text, and action readability. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include single-nub camera control, UMD loading and noise, Memory Stick saves, battery life, regional language, ad hoc requirements, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Decent driving is held back by an empty, unstable city.
Driver ’76 casts the player as wheelman Ray in a stylized 1970s New York. More than fifty vehicles with different handling give its driving missions a workable foundation, and the city has enough room for a chase. Leaving the car exposes a much thinner game: Ray cannot jump, and lock-on gunfights lack impact. The roughly five-to-six-hour story repeatedly asks for timed trips, escorts and police escapes. Taxi and other optional jobs rarely make the city feel more varied. Comic-panel scenes and a funk-heavy soundtrack capture the period, while sparse traffic and pedestrians make the streets feel strangely empty. A direct PSP review also reports fluctuating frame rate, near-minute mission loads and occasional freezes during driving. Those interruptions affect the very activity the game does best. It may satisfy portable chase enthusiasts, but players seeking a rich open world or strong shooting will find little support here.
Strengths
- Varied vehicle handling and an effective comic-and-funk period style.
Weaknesses
- Repetitive jobs and disruptive PSP loading and freezes.
Who it is for: Players seeking a brief portable driving adventure rather than substantial shooting.
Play notes: The frozen 2008 year conflicts with a contemporary 2007 PSP review and needs a separate date audit.
