About this game
Double Yakuman is a Game Boy card and board release centered on card or board-game rules, rules interaction, and board assessment. Matches, decks, or board objectives create a repeatable strategy loop, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on campaign length or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Card, board, and state readability determine usability, while silhouettes, contrast, and audio cues need to remain clear on the monochrome display. The main genre-specific friction is that rules terminology, opponent pacing, and text density raise the entry barrier. In addition, password or battery saves, link-cable requirements, display blur, manual dependence, and regional language can affect use of the original cartridge today. This description covers only this release and excludes emulator features, modern-port conveniences, and content from other platforms.
Collected in series
Double Yakuman is VAP’s Japanese mahjong series, built around drawing tiles, choosing discards and shaping scoring hands. Character opponents and different table formats give you room to weigh a promising hand against a safer play.

Game Boy (GB)AI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
More substantial two-player mahjong than its monochrome shell suggests, with old-fashioned menus.
The 1993 Game Boy Double Yakuman is neither a Nintendo Yakuman sequel nor the later four-player Double Yakuman II. Its two-player Japanese mahjong foundation supports an immediate match, a configurable Mahjong House and a tournament against a field of computer opponents. Seven rivals with differing play styles give repeated solo rounds some character, and a link cable enables human head-to-head play. Calls such as pon and kan use a B-button submenu: functional, though slower than directly selecting a tile or action. Rule toggles, music choices and reactions to exceptional hands add personality to a utilitarian monochrome display. The game still expects familiarity with Japanese mahjong and provides little reason for a newcomer to push through its dense small-screen tiles and menus. The score credits a relatively complete portable ruleset and several ways to play, while accounting for interface overhead and a narrow audience. It is specifically the original Game Boy cartridge, not the mechanically different sequel.
Strengths
- Substantial two-player rules and rival behavior
- Configurable solo, tournament and link play
Weaknesses
- Menu-heavy calls on a tiny display
- Steep entry for mahjong newcomers
Who it is for: Players already comfortable with Japanese mahjong on classic Game Boy.
Play notes: Original two-player release; Double Yakuman II is a different four-player game.
