About this game
Cross Country Racing is a Game Boy Color racing release centered on driving and route control, vehicle control, and route judgment. Tracks raise pressure through corners, rivals, and time targets, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on campaign length or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Speed, track boundaries, and vehicle feedback determine driving readability, while color choices need to distinguish characters, objects, and routes rather than serve as decoration alone. The main genre-specific friction is that draw distance, collision feedback, and steering precision can limit consistency. In addition, battery saves, link cables, cartridge-specific hardware, the unlit display, and regional language can affect the original experience. This description covers only this release and excludes emulator features, modern-port conveniences, and content from other platforms.

A compact rally racer with worthwhile maintenance depth and awkward conveniences.
Cross Country Racing does more than turn rallying into a short burst of overtaking. Vehicle adjustments, tire wear and event planning influence whether a championship can actually be completed. Responsive handling makes mistakes easier to connect to the chosen line or inadequate preparation, rewarding players willing to study maintenance and driving rhythm. Twenty stages spanning asphalt, sand and snow, together with championship and time-trial formats, supply worthwhile practice material. Single rallies impose a fixed stage order, however, rather than allowing immediate selection, and resource rules require experimentation. The scenery establishes a convincing racing atmosphere, but hectic race music cannot be switched off separately. Passwords preserve progress if recorded carefully. It is better suited to deliberate handheld racing than an effortless, freely selected quick drive.
Strengths
- Tuning, maintenance and tire resources add meaningful planning.
- Reliable handling, varied surfaces, time trials and passwords support practice.
Weaknesses
- Fixed single-rally ordering, hectic music without a separate toggle and manual passwords reduce convenience.
Who it is for: GBC rally players willing to study maintenance and racing lines.
Play notes: This covers the European GBC cartridge, not the canceled PS project; Duel needs compatible systems and a cable, while time trials allow direct stage selection.
