About this game

Close Combat - First to Fight is a Xbox shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and weapon and firepower management. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while standard or progressive-scan video, widescreen support, HDD caching, and Dolby Digital audio need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include disc loading, the internal HDD and cache, memory units, regional language, display modes, legacy controller ports, and retired Xbox Live services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Cooperative tactics work despite inconsistent AI.

Close Combat: First to Fight on the original Xbox places the player in command of a four-Marine fireteam in Beirut. Orders for movement and positioning can make an encounter feel like a tense small-unit operation when teammates use cover effectively. In close quarters, however, their AI sometimes makes inexplicable choices. Six missions divided into checkpoints cover search, rescue and capture objectives. The solo campaign has reasonable variety, but the direct Xbox review finds cooperative play the stronger use of its simple structure. At launch, four people could play through split screen or Xbox Live. Indoor and outdoor areas are serviceable, though repeated enemy models, clipping shadows, bodies crossing geometry and weak voices reveal limited polish. These observations support independent judgments across the four dimensions, without converting an outlet rating. Online capability is a documented 2005 feature, not a claim that the official network still operates. The period local cooperative design remains the game’s clearest appeal.

Strengths

  • Squad orders and cooperative play add tactical interest.

Weaknesses

  • Unreliable squad AI and rough audiovisual polish.

Play notes: Launch-era Xbox Live is not a current access claim.
