About this game

Bombing Bastards is a Wii U puzzle game centered on puzzle, maze, or device solving, rule recognition, and spatial or logical judgment. Compact stages add conditions and tighter constraints over time, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Graphics, audio, touch, or pointer feedback need to support decisions directly, while HD television output and the GamePad screen need to divide maps, status, touch input, and primary focus clearly. The genre-specific limitation is that limited explanations, input recognition, repetition, or abrupt difficulty can stall progress. Platform conditions also include GamePad battery life and range, shifts between two screens, loading, performance, and retired online and Miiverse services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

Stable, demanding bomb puzzles are undermined by harsh resets.

Bombing Bastards uses familiar grid bombing for a surprisingly severe Wii U action puzzle. Expanded blast ranges and remote detonation create positioning choices, while themed worlds add slippery ice and hazardous gas. Enemies quickly learn to evade bombs, however, so many stages feel dependent on finding the right power-up rather than improving a route. Arenas regenerate on death; their variety comes at the cost of learning from a failed layout. Bosses can be skipped, and four-player local battles offer relief, but versus options are sparse and the reviewed release has no online mode. Soft cartoon art and Dr Wallow’s announcements give the game an amusing mismatch of cheerful looks and cruel difficulty. Repeated classical-melody remixes are less engaging. The direct Wii U review reports a consistent frame rate and an uncluttered screen. It documented missing GamePad sound at launch, while a later developer comment states a North American patch added it, so that flaw cannot be described as permanent across builds. This suits players who welcome punishing bomb puzzles and random resets.

Strengths

  • Themed hazards, readable display and local battles.

Weaknesses

  • Evasive AI, map rerolls and limited versus settings.

Who it is for: Players comfortable with punishing bomb puzzles.

Play notes: North American Wii U review; launch audio issue reportedly patched.
