About this game

Asterix & Obelix - Kick Buttix is a PlayStation 2 action game centered on platform movement and landing judgment, puzzle, maze, or device solving, and collection and development goals. Stages build pressure through routes, enemy patterns, and changing objectives, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hits, camera behavior, and readable hazards determine whether feedback remains dependable, while 3D scenes, streamed data, cinematics, surround audio, and interlaced television output need to preserve action and state readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera behavior, collision rules, input mapping, and repeated ground after failure can raise the entry barrier. Platform conditions also include DVD loading, the 8MB Memory Card, analog sticks and pressure-sensitive buttons, Multitap, Network Adapter, dedicated peripherals, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Character-switching puzzles shine briefly amid repetitive Roman brawls.

Asterix & Obelix: Kick Buttix sends the Gaulish pair across Roman provinces to find their missing neighbors. Asterix can enter tight spaces and use torches or magic potion, while Obelix moves heavy objects and handles larger fights. A few puzzles genuinely exploit that contrast. A contemporary PS2 review nevertheless describes large but mostly linear stages dominated by repeated bashing of a small set of Roman foes. Helmets can buy new combos, yet much of the campaign does not require them, and the computer-controlled partner rarely acts intelligently. Familiar characters and settings provide some comic charm, though dated scenery and recurring boss designs fail to sustain the promise. The score recognizes the useful hero-switching moments while treating the repetitive combat and weak partner behavior as real costs. This is the North American PS2 edition, not a later remaster; fans of the comics may enjoy its tour, while demanding action players will find the structure thin.

Strengths

  • Different hero abilities make selected puzzles enjoyable.

Weaknesses

  • Large linear stages repeatedly reuse enemies and bosses.
  • Weak partner AI and unnecessary combos limit combat depth.

Who it is for: Asterix fans comfortable with straightforward platform brawling.

Play notes: This North American PS2 title corresponds to XXL, not later remasters.
