About this game

Art of Fighting is a Wii fighting game centered on combat encounters, story, case, or mission progress, and move inputs. Short bouts use character differences and rising difficulty for variety, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hit feedback, and readable arenas create match tension, while standard-definition output, motion feedback, and interface scale at television distance need to preserve control readability. The genre-specific limitation is that button or motion mapping, move recognition, networking, and cpu behavior can affect balance. Platform conditions also include the Sensor Bar, remote batteries, motion calibration, peripheral requirements, storage limits, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

Historic ideas and striking art meet sluggish combat.

The Wii Virtual Console release of Art of Fighting preserves an early SNK experiment with a spirit gauge, taunts and powerful special moves. Spending or draining that resource gives opponents something to manage beyond their life bars. The actual exchanges are less flexible: attacks and movement feel slow, combinations are limited, and projectile trading can take over a match. Story play also restricts character choice to Ryo and Robert, leaving the wider cast mainly for two-player battles and limiting solo variety. The release remains visually memorable. Its enormous animated fighters, camera zoom, bruised faces and detailed backgrounds make each encounter look more dramatic than its mechanics feel. The contemporary Wii Virtual Console review describes those effects in the downloadable version while still finding the pacing sluggish. It is worthwhile for players curious about SNK fighting history or seeking occasional head-to-head play, with clear limits for anyone wanting fast and expressive combat. This is a 2007 Wii judgment, not a claim about an original arcade cabinet, the separate PS3 download or current Wii Shop access.

Strengths

  • Spirit management and giant sprites are distinctive.

Weaknesses

  • Restricted story choice and slow exchanges limit depth.

Who it is for: Players interested in SNK history and local versus play.

Play notes: Wii Virtual Console only; arcade and PS3 remain separate.
