About this game

Anno: Mutationem is a PlayStation 5 adventure game centered on area and route exploration, character and object interaction, and objective or clue progression. Locations, objectives, and clues gradually open the main chapters, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Theme, character expression, and environmental clues need to support exploration together, while SSD streaming, 4K and HDR output, 3D audio, performance or quality modes, and high-density interfaces need to preserve feedback and information clarity together. The genre-specific limitation is that guidance, objective triggers, camera behavior, or dense text can create search and comprehension costs. Platform conditions also include install size, SSD space, patch version, DualSense battery life, visual mode and frame rate, online dependencies, PS VR2 requirements, and cross-generation version differences affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Striking neon spaces and enjoyable combat are held back by awkward exploration.

ANNO: Mutationem finds an appealing contrast between investigating a three-dimensional city and fighting in side-view arenas. Ann's swords, pistol, and developing skills give combat room to improve as the adventure progresses. Side jobs and equipment crafting provide alternatives, but their presence does not always translate into a focused narrative rhythm. The strongest constant is visual identity: pixel characters inhabit rainy neon spaces that encourage a closer look. Unfortunately, that curiosity meets practical resistance. The launch PS5 review describes collision snags, awkward fixed-camera navigation, and stiff jumping, making exploration less comfortable than the scenery suggests. It is a worthwhile consideration for players attracted to cyberpunk atmosphere and compact action systems, with tolerance for rough traversal. Later patches are outside this historical assessment.

Strengths

  • Distinctive pixel and 3D combination
  • Skills expand side-view combat

Weaknesses

  • Traversal collision and camera friction
  • Some unfocused systems

Who it is for: Players interested in cyberpunk cities, character action, and mixed visual styles.

Play notes: Allow for fixed cameras and object edges; technical judgment covers the March 2022 PS5 review.
