About this game

Alina of the Arena casts the player as a gladiator fighting through randomized encounters. Cards form the available actions, and collecting or discarding them changes the options a run can offer. Equipment in each hand modifies the deck’s effectiveness, allowing combinations such as paired daggers, a sword and shield, or a two-handed weapon. The hexagonal arena makes positioning a central decision. Movement and knockback can open escape routes, exploit terrain, or cause enemies to hit one another. Deck management and spatial tactics therefore operate together throughout the game. DANGEN Entertainment published the PS4 version in 2023.

Rewarding tactical combinations behind an awkward initial interface.

Alina makes a strong case for combining deck building with positioning. Your hands determine more than damage: equipment changes the value of cards, while hexagonal arenas let enemy attacks become opportunities. Short campaigns connect fights, shops and champions without demanding a lengthy story commitment, and unlockable classes encourage another approach on the next run. Stirring music helps sell the arena atmosphere, although the chunky artwork is less appealing. The initial obstacle is understanding the controller interface, where poorly labelled selectable elements add friction before the tactical decisions become satisfying. Official difficulty options, pausing and tutorial reminders offer useful breathing room. Players willing to learn the interface can find a substantial range of choices inside these compact battles; those seeking immediate clarity should approach more cautiously.

Strengths

  • Positioning, equipment and cards create interdependent tactical choices.
  • Compact routes and class unlocks encourage different builds.
  • Stirring music supports the arena atmosphere.

Weaknesses

  • The original PS4 review reports poorly labelled interface elements and cumbersome controller navigation.
  • Chunky pixel artwork is not especially appealing.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy compact turn-based tactics, deck construction and learning an initially demanding interface.

Play notes: Presentation and interface observations come from the 2023 PS4 review. Current official features include tutorial reminders and preset difficulty; later fixes to navigation or the reported mid-campaign saving limitation were not verified.

Stirring music carries the arena mood better than the comparatively unappealing chunky visuals.

Interface interpretation slows the initial experience; difficulty options and pausing help without proving that navigation has been repaired.
