About this game

After Wave: Downfall is a PlayStation 4 shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and area and route exploration. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while HD output, HDR or PS4 Pro modes, HDD streaming, surround audio, and television-distance interfaces need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include HDD installs and loading, patch version, storage space, DualShock 4 battery life, PS Camera or PS VR requirements, visual modes, frame rate, and network services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Approachable PS4 shooting with co-op and modest upgrades.

After Wave: Downfall puts a small boat on a forward-moving 3D waterway, weaving around projectiles and obstacles while shooting marine enemies and stage bosses. The expressly tested PS4 build has a direct control scheme: the left stick moves, X fires, and the triggers slow or boost the craft. Adjusting speed to match the barrage gives a simple loop some useful flexibility. Six pilots, crystal upgrades, story, arcade, and practice modes provide reasons to return, and local cooperation lets two players tackle busy scenes together. Stages unlock in sequence through easy, medium, and hard difficulties. That teaches the rules gradually, though it also withholds much of the route at first. The cartoon marine theme is coherent but the reviewer finds the scenes bland, the sound unremarkable, and several pieces of story text mistranslated. This is accessible, occasionally hectic shooting rather than a distinctive or deeply varied system. The source does not establish a frame-rate figure or later patch behavior, and neither is inferred here.

Strengths

  • Speed control and local co-op add flexibility.

Weaknesses

  • Bland visuals and initially gated stages.

Who it is for: Players seeking accessible local arcade co-op.

Play notes: Only the tested PS4 build; no frame-rate figure inferred.
