About this game

A Hat in Time is a PlayStation 4 action game centered on platform movement and landing judgment, area and route exploration, and stage objectives. Stages build pressure through routes, enemy patterns, and changing objectives, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hits, camera behavior, and readable hazards determine whether feedback remains dependable, while HD output, HDR or PS4 Pro modes, HDD streaming, surround audio, and television-distance interfaces need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera behavior, collision rules, input mapping, and repeated ground after failure can raise the entry barrier. Platform conditions also include HDD installs and loading, patch version, storage space, DualShock 4 battery life, PS Camera or PS VR requirements, visual modes, frame rate, and network services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Fluid movement and charm with uneven level design.

A Hat in Time is immediately appealing when its heroine links a double jump, dive and wall climb into one flowing route. Hats and badges add possibilities, while eccentric bird filmmakers, ghosts and buoyant music turn collecting hourglasses into a playful journey. Stealth scenes, bosses and separate platform challenges keep the adventure willing to experiment. Many ordinary objectives are less demanding, however, and conspicuous collectibles reduce the satisfaction of searching. The movement system is not consistently matched by equally strong level design. On the original PS4 release, basic control feels well tuned, although some high platforms become harder to judge because of the camera. It suits relaxed exploration and characterful comedy more than a demand for sustained precision challenges.

Strengths

  • Fluid chained moves and hats add traversal possibilities.

Weaknesses

  • Shallow objectives and occasional camera trouble limit play.

Who it is for: Platform players who enjoy relaxed collecting and odd characters.

Play notes: 2017 PS4 base game, excluding later expansions.
