About this game
198 X is a PlayStation 4 shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and area and route exploration. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while HD output, HDR or PS4 Pro modes, HDD streaming, surround audio, and television-distance interfaces need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include HDD installs and loading, patch version, storage space, DualShock 4 battery life, PS Camera or PS VR requirements, visual modes, frame rate, and network services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

A vivid arcade memoir that stops before its ideas mature.
198X uses five arcade-inspired games to reflect a teenager’s isolation and uncertainty about growing up. Shifts between brawling, shooting and racing have an emotional purpose, and neon pixel art, music and voice work make the arcade feel like a temporary refuge. Yet each game is introduced only briefly, and the story stops just as its relationships take shape. The PS4 controls also vary in quality: the brawler’s uppercut collision is inaccurate, while unresponsive jumps in the platform section can turn pits and spikes into frustrating deaths. Its strongest appeal is a vivid short-form mood piece. Players expecting five substantial arcade games, or consistently precise action, will find the released package less satisfying.
Strengths
- Coherent pixel art and music.
- Genre changes serve the story.
Weaknesses
- Brief mechanical development.
- An unresolved introductory arc.
Who it is for: Players drawn to arcade aesthetics and short coming-of-age stories.
Play notes: Short first chapter; possible future material is not included.

| Dimension | Review state | Score | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dimension The episode ends just as story and play begin to connect. Brevity itself is not a flaw, but both the character arc and mechanics lack a satisfying payoff here. | Reviewed | 5.9 / 10 | Not provided |
| Dimension Five arcade forms reflect the teenager’s emotions, so switching genres has narrative purpose. Each is brief, leaving little room for its individual mechanics to deepen. | Reviewed | 7.0 / 10 | Not provided |
| Dimension Neon pixel scenes and music create a coherent arcade memory. Changes in mood are legible through both sight and sound, giving the presentation more completeness than the individual games. | Reviewed | 8.2 / 10 | Not provided |
| Dimension The PS4 brawler feels tactile, but uppercut collision is unreliable. The platform section has unresponsive jumps that produce avoidable pit and spike deaths, a real control cost. | Reviewed | 6.0 / 10 | Not provided |
