About this game

007 - From Russia with Love is a PSP shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, aiming and shooting, and positioning and evasion. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while the portable widescreen, UMD streaming, compressed audio, and handheld-scale interface need to preserve targets, text, and action readability. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include single-nub camera control, UMD loading and noise, Memory Stick saves, battery life, regional language, ad hoc requirements, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Film charm survives a severely awkward portable camera.

Carrying a Connery-era Bond adventure has an obvious appeal, and the portable game retains recognizable film situations, extravagant gadgets and third-person combat. It is a reduced adaptation, however: driving missions and other console material disappear, leaving less variety and fewer of the strongest cinematic set pieces. The PSP-specific controls are a larger problem. Camera rotation sits on square and circle and moves slowly, while automatic targeting does not reliably track threats. Bond Focus requires standing still, increasing exposure during fights that already demand careful ammunition use. These are costs of this handheld edition, not defects borrowed from the PlayStation 2 or Xbox releases. It is mainly for someone determined to carry this particular film adaptation and willing to tolerate its camera. Players seeking the fuller campaign and more comfortable shooting will be better served by a home-console edition. This review concerns the historical PSP port only.

Strengths

  • Preserves film situations and recognizable gadgets.

Weaknesses

  • Driving levels are missing and targeting is cumbersome.

Who it is for: Bond fans willing to tolerate a difficult handheld control scheme.

Play notes: 2006 PSP port, without borrowed PS2 technical claims.
