Overview

What this platform is

PlayStation Portable, usually shortened to PSP, is Sony’s first handheld console. It launched in Japan on December 12, 2004. Its screen, buttons, speakers and battery are integrated, so games can be played without a television. PSP software is made for this platform; the machine does not read PS2 discs.

Main features

A widescreen display sits between a directional pad, four familiar face buttons and a single analog sliding control. Common PSP models load physical games from small UMD discs. Memory Stick storage holds saves and media files. Music and video playback broaden its uses, and supported games and models offer wireless multiplayer connections.

Before you play

Screen designs, connectors and wireless capabilities vary between models. PSP go has a sliding body and built-in storage but no UMD drive, so an existing physical UMD cannot simply be inserted into it. Check the exact hardware model, storage format and game compatibility before assembling a setup. Battery condition, button response and disc-drive operation also matter when using an older handheld.
