About this game

Reid and his companions set out after meeting a mysterious visitor whose appearance is tied to a threat to their world. Travel, conversations and battles build an adventure around the group’s changing relationships. The combat system places the party on a 2D battlefield where positioning, Artes and spells unfold in real time. The remaster lets players adjust the journey with destination icons, encounter controls and battle retry options. Original and remastered visual and sound settings can be switched, offering different ways to revisit the same adventure. These conveniences change how the journey is paced while retaining its underlying party RPG structure.

Tales of Eternia Remastered

A worthwhile return for its companions and flexible pacing, with an ageing combat framework.

This remaster is most convincing as a way to spend time with a well-matched party. Contrasting personalities and complementary combat roles give the journey an identity that convenience settings alone could never create. The newer navigation and encounter options are useful because they let players decide which parts of that journey deserve their time. They cannot completely update its underlying battles, however. A crowded horizontal plane can make position and intention harder to read, and the visual treatment does not erase the age of the environments. The result rewards an interest in traditional party adventures more than a demand for modern action fluidity. Platform differences also matter: the reviewed Switch versions have distinct loading and movement limitations, while the PS5 source uses Pro hardware. Those conditions are reflected in each release’s technical judgment rather than flattened into a single shared platform score.

Strengths

  • Companion chemistry and useful pacing controls.

Weaknesses

  • Crowded old-style battles and dated scenery.

Who it is for: Players interested in classic party RPGs and their characters.

Play notes: The October14 North American review uses PS5 Pro. Readability and options were inspected; measured FPS, loading times and base-PS5 behaviour are not established.
