About this game

NHL 23 is a PlayStation 5 sports game centered on competitive sport controls, shifts between attack and defense, and score or tournament goals. Matches, challenges, and tournament goals give sessions clear boundaries, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Players, venues, animation, and score feedback establish the match atmosphere, while SSD streaming, 4K and HDR output, 3D audio, performance or quality modes, and high-density interfaces need to preserve feedback and information clarity together. The genre-specific limitation is that opponent ai, control precision, multiplayer accessories, and period-specific rosters can affect consistency. Platform conditions also include install size, SSD space, patch version, DualSense battery life, visual mode and frame rate, online dependencies, PS VR2 requirements, and cross-generation version differences affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Custom offline leagues retain value, limited by goalkeeping and career writing.

Online services closed on August 31, 2026, leaving offline hockey and career content as its remaining appeal. Stumble actions let an attack survive a collision, and the passing and shooting loop remains immediately enjoyable. Goalkeepers are vulnerable to repeated angles and one-timers, however, reducing uncertainty once reliable scoring patterns emerge. Franchise offers custom league sizes and drafts, giving an invented competition meaningful longevity. It is more appealing than Be A Pro, whose dialogue makes the personal career feel lifeless. The PS5 review reports clean on-ice visuals and successfully configured custom leagues, while familiar menus and unvoiced encounters leave the surrounding presentation less polished. It remains suitable for offline team management and local hockey, not for HUT, online leagues or cross-platform competition.

Strengths

  • Detailed custom leagues and drafts
  • Stumble actions add attacking recoveries

Weaknesses

  • Goalkeepers can be exploited
  • Personal-career dialogue is dull

Who it is for: Offline league managers and local hockey players.

Play notes: Online services are closed; HUT and online matches are unavailable.
