About this game
NHL 22 is a PlayStation 5 sports game centered on competitive sport controls, shifts between attack and defense, and score or tournament goals. Matches, challenges, and tournament goals give sessions clear boundaries, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Players, venues, animation, and score feedback establish the match atmosphere, while SSD streaming, 4K and HDR output, 3D audio, performance or quality modes, and high-density interfaces need to preserve feedback and information clarity together. The genre-specific limitation is that opponent ai, control precision, multiplayer accessories, and period-specific rosters can affect consistency. Platform conditions also include install size, SSD space, patch version, DualSense battery life, visual mode and frame rate, online dependencies, PS VR2 requirements, and cross-generation version differences affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Solid offline hockey remains, but the online package is no longer available.
NHL 22 is most convincing on the ice, where stick contact, puck control and less automatic passing make contests feel more natural. X-Factors distinguish individual careers more clearly than they transform entire team matches. Its present scope is narrower: EA ended online services on August 31, 2026, so HUT and online competition cannot count as current value. Local matches, Be a Pro and Franchise still offer different competitive and managerial rhythms. Arena and ice detail create atmosphere, while weaker faces and inappropriate career commentary expose unevenness. PS5 menu speed and tactile feedback help, but low-contrast colours and quickly disappearing projected statistics hurt readability. It is best for fans interested in offline careers or couch games with this season of teams. Do not buy for discontinued online progression, and remember that quitting an unfinished match does not preserve that match.
Strengths
- Natural puck and stick interactions
- Substantial offline career and management options
Weaknesses
- Online services have ended
- Uneven interface readability and character details
Who it is for: Hockey fans focused on local games and offline careers.
Play notes: Online shutdown: August 31, 2026; quitting a match does not save its unfinished state.
