About this game
Mother 1+2 is a compilation of the first two installments of the Mother series, MOTHER and MOTHER 2: GIYGAS STRIKES BACK! (known outside Japan as EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound, respectively). Mother tells the story of Ninten, a 12-year-old boy who journeys around the world using his psychic powers to collect eight melodies in order to save the planet from an evil race of mind-controlling aliens. Mother 2 tells the story of Ness, a young boy who journeys around the world also using psychic powers to collect eight melodies in order to save the future from an alien of pure evil, intending to sentence all of reality to the horror of eternal darkness. The version of Mother included in this bundle has a special item that can be used to change the difficulty of the game, since it lessens the amount of random encounters and modifies the overall status of the enemies.
Collected in series
EarthBound, known as MOTHER in Japan, is an offbeat RPG series about young heroes and their companions facing extraordinary trouble. You explore towns, talk to eccentric people and fight with psychic powers and everyday objects, on journeys where absurd humour sits alongside tender moments.

Substantial progression with a patient long-form rhythm
Mother 1+2 centers on exploration, combat, and character growth, area exploration, and collection goals. Story beats, exploration, and progression resources support a longer campaign, giving the handheld release a recognizable rhythm and a clear set of player goals. Characters, world building, and music carry most of the atmosphere, and the best parts connect readable objectives with steady mechanical feedback. Dense text, menu layers, and repeated battles can slow portable play, which is the main reason the original cartridge can feel less approachable today. This GameNavo assessment uses the release description, classification, media record, and retained source evidence. It does not import user ratings, press aggregates, emulator conveniences, or features belonging to console versions and later remakes.
Strengths
- The central loop connects exploration, combat, and character growth, and area exploration with readable goals.
- Progress has a clear structure and introduces recognizable stage or system changes.
- Presentation supports the rules with useful visual and audio feedback.
Weaknesses
- Dense text, menu layers, and repeated battles can slow portable play.
- The original GBA release lacks modern conveniences such as rewind, save states, and expanded tutorials.
Who it is for: Players who enjoy role-playing games, accept period-specific handheld controls, and want to understand the original release on its own terms.
Play notes: This assessment is based on documented release evidence rather than a full playthrough; language, link hardware, and cartridge save condition may affect use.
