About this game

Mortal Kombat 4 is a Nintendo 64 fighting game centered on combat encounters, move inputs, and offense-defense reads. Short bouts use character differences and rising difficulty for variety, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hit feedback, and readable arenas create match tension, while 3D scenes, fog, textures, and cartridge audio need to preserve target readability within limited memory and television output. The genre-specific limitation is that button or motion mapping, move recognition, networking, and cpu behavior can affect balance. Platform conditions also include camera control, stick precision, Controller Pak saves, Rumble Pak support, Expansion Pak requirements, and four-player setup can affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

Familiar fighting gains weapon options and varied modes, but uneven three-dimensional presentation.

Mortal Kombat 4 changes the fighters to polygons without making players learn an entirely different three-dimensional combat system. Familiar spacing, combinations and special moves remain central, with weapons and sidestepping adding situational choices. Practice supports learning characters, while arcade, two-character, endurance, team and tournament formats provide more reasons to revisit their moves than simply watching endings. Eerie music, recognizable announcements and voiced realtime scenes maintain the series atmosphere. Animation is stiff, however, and near-camera geometry can expose clipping through floors or walls; original audio is mono. Two selectable control layouts and saved difficulty, round and volume options make ordinary setup convenient, though tournament entry feels awkward. It suits repeated character practice rather than expectations that polygon graphics automatically bring refined animation or modern handling.

Strengths

  • Weapons and sidesteps expand familiar combat.
  • Practice and varied match formats sustain replay.
  • Music and announcements preserve the atmosphere.

Weaknesses

  • Stiff animation and near-camera clipping.
  • Awkward tournament setup and mono audio.

Who it is for: Fighting players interested in learning the series' characters and attack rhythm.

Play notes: Original N64 edition: choose a comfortable control layout and save settings; tournament participant counts do not imply equally many simultaneous controllers.
