About this game

Mafia: The Old Country is a PlayStation 5 adventure game centered on combat encounters, area and route exploration, and story, case, or mission progress. Locations, objectives, and clues gradually open the main chapters, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Theme, character expression, and environmental clues need to support exploration together, while SSD streaming, 4K and HDR output, 3D audio, performance or quality modes, and high-density interfaces need to preserve feedback and information clarity together. The genre-specific limitation is that guidance, objective triggers, camera behavior, or dense text can create search and comprehension costs. Platform conditions also include install size, SSD space, patch version, DualSense battery life, visual mode and frame rate, online dependencies, PS VR2 requirements, and cross-generation version differences affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

7.0 / 10PlayStation 5

Atmosphere and acting exceed the range of its action.

The Old Country narrows its ambition to a linear crime story, and its strongest argument is the combination of performance, framing and Sicilian detail. Those qualities make familiar material engaging without making it surprising. Shooting, stealth and knife duels initially provide a serviceable foundation, but repetition and strict mission boundaries leave limited room for development. A lean structure also does not prevent the later character arcs from feeling rushed. Explicit base PS5 testing identifies drops, transition stutter and pop-in that interrupt the cinematic continuity on which the game relies. This judgment concerns the original 2025 campaign and standard-console build, not the reviewer’s improved Pro experience or an assumed current patch state.

Strengths

  • Acting and regional detail create a persuasive setting.

Weaknesses

  • Restricted repetition and base-console hitches weaken continuity.

Who it is for: Players prioritising crime drama over sandbox freedom.

Play notes: Original base PS5 campaign; Pro results are not transferred.
