About this game
Gun Metal is a Xbox shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and area and route exploration. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while standard or progressive-scan video, widescreen support, HDD caching, and Dolby Digital audio need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include disc loading, the internal HDD and cache, memory units, regional language, display modes, legacy controller ports, and retired Xbox Live services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

A strong transformation premise with modest execution.
The original Xbox Gun Metal has an immediately attractive idea: one Havoc Suit can become either a fast jet or a heavily armed robot. Changing form gives the player a way to cross the map quickly and then engage ground targets with heavier weapons. The handling does not fully serve that idea. Jet turns feel broader than desired, while the robot moves slowly enough to make repeated transformations a practical necessity. Much of the campaign begins with defense and escort work against enemy formations that recur in the same pattern. Retrying often means memorizing an attack wave rather than discovering a new tactical answer, and the later missions are the only ones that substantially increase pressure. Textures and effects convey the battlefield competently without a striking visual identity. The contemporary Xbox review reports a solid frame rate, so the technical limitation here is chiefly input feel rather than invented instability. It remains a worthwhile curiosity for players drawn to transformation, provided they expect straightforward missions.
Strengths
- The two-form combat idea is appealing.
Weaknesses
- Sticky handling and repetitive escort missions.
Who it is for: Action players interested in transforming mechs.
