About this game

Crazy Taxi - Double Punch is a PSP racing game centered on vehicle control, route judgment, and speed and overtaking management. Tracks raise pressure through corners, rivals, and time targets, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Speed, track boundaries, and vehicle feedback determine driving readability, while the portable widescreen, UMD streaming, compressed audio, and handheld-scale interface need to preserve targets, text, and action readability. The genre-specific limitation is that visibility, collisions, steering precision, wheel support, or loading can limit consistency. Platform conditions also include single-nub camera control, UMD loading and noise, Memory Stick saves, battery life, regional language, ad hoc requirements, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

A handy two-game package with significant portable compromises.

Crazy Taxi: Double Punch is the Japanese title for the PSP compilation released elsewhere as Fare Wars. It brings the first two Crazy Taxi games together, preserving rapid fare chains, route shortcuts and Crazy Hop in a portable format. Time trials and local ad hoc variants, including head-to-head and C-R-A-Z-Y modes, create more replay options than a bare port would offer. It is not an untouched reproduction of the originals. A direct PSP retrospective documents a 30 fps target where the earlier home releases ran at 60, shoulder-button driving that feels cramped, and replacement of licensed storefronts and music. Custom MP3 playback can partly answer the soundtrack loss, but not the input or responsiveness trade-offs. These observations describe the PSP compilation, not the Dreamcast originals or every regional release. Players seeking brief handheld fare runs can still enjoy its arcade loop. Those who chiefly value the original soundtrack and the smoothest sensation of speed should consider the older versions instead.

Strengths

  • Two classics plus short-session and local modes.

Weaknesses

  • Lower frame target, awkward shoulders and replaced music.

Who it is for: Players seeking quick portable arcade fare runs.

Play notes: Japanese Double Punch is Fare Wars; Dreamcast performance is not transferred.
