About this game

Cel Damage is a Xbox fighting game centered on combat encounters, offense-defense reads, and character matchups. Short bouts use character differences and rising difficulty for variety, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hit feedback, and readable arenas create match tension, while standard or progressive-scan video, widescreen support, HDD caching, and Dolby Digital audio need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that button mapping, move recognition, multiplayer accessories, and cpu behavior can affect balance. Platform conditions also include disc loading, the internal HDD and cache, memory units, regional language, display modes, legacy controller ports, and retired Xbox Live services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

6.4 / 10Original Xbox

A distinctive cartoon car brawl works for local parties but loses depth quickly.

This score concerns the original 2001 Xbox Cel Damage, not a later console edition or Cel Damage HD. It turns arena car combat into an exaggerated cartoon show, with lively cel-shaded characters, vehicles and destructible scenery. Four-player split screen with bots makes a chaotic session easy to begin, and the responsive controls emphasize dodging and positioning rather than simulation driving. That accessible mayhem matches the developer's own account of the finished game's identity. The contemporary Xbox review also finds a damaging imbalance: weak default weapons compete with axe and chainsaw pickups that can end a fight in one hit. Matches consequently become races to seize a dominant weapon rather than varied tactical duels. Smack Attack, Gate Relay and Flag Rally offer distinct short-session goals, but there is no dedicated solo campaign and the available sights and jokes wear thin after a few hours. Ordinary audio does less work than the art style. Crucially, the Xbox review reports smooth play even with four players and bots, so the intended local-party setting still works. The score rewards that clear strength while holding back for shallow progression and uneven combat balance.

Strengths

  • Memorable real-time cartoon presentation
  • Easy-to-start four-player local play
  • Responsive original-Xbox controls

Weaknesses

  • One-hit pickups dominate combat
  • Thin solo progression and variety
  • Audio is less distinctive than the visuals

Who it is for: Friends wanting a light local split-screen vehicle brawl.

Play notes: Only the original Xbox game is assessed; later releases and Cel Damage HD may differ.
