About this game

Blaster Master is a Wii U shooter game centered on puzzle, maze, or device solving, area and route exploration, and collection and development goals. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while HD television output and the GamePad screen need to divide maps, status, touch input, and primary focus clearly. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and multiplayer service conditions can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include GamePad battery life and range, shifts between two screens, loading, performance, and retired online and Miiverse services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

7.5 / 10Wii U

Two-view exploration endures, aided by Wii U save states.

Blaster Master on Wii U Virtual Console still has an unusual and rewarding structure: tank-based side-scrolling exploration alternates with on-foot overhead shooting, and boss rewards upgrade the vehicle to open new routes across eight areas. Distinct settings and catchy music keep the NES design recognizable. It is also unforgiving. The original game offers neither saves nor passwords, while enemies, jumps and bosses demand practice over a long route. The Wii U wrapper’s save states meaningfully reduce the cost of losing progress without removing the underlying challenge. A direct Wii U review finds movement responsive, but warns that certain opening and boss scenes flash intensely, a real concern for photosensitive players. Its darker palette is an artistic limitation, not a penalty simply for being old. This judgment is about the Wii U release and does not grant its save-state convenience to Wii Virtual Console or the original Famicom version.

Strengths

  • Vehicle upgrades, exploration and music are memorable.

Weaknesses

  • Harsh challenge and intensely flashing scenes.

Who it is for: Fans of demanding retro exploration shooters.

Play notes: Save states are Wii U-specific; heed the flashing warning.
