About this game

Back to Bed is a puzzle game set in surreal dreams. Bob keeps sleepwalking forward while the player controls Subob, a manifestation of his subconscious, to protect him among impossible constructions and guide him safely back to bed. Moving objects changes Bob’s route, making the order of preparations and the timing of actions important before he reaches a hazard. Thirty dream levels provide the main journey, with a more demanding Nightmare mode offering further challenges built around planning and guiding the sleepwalker.

Back to Bed

Striking dreams invite exploration, but precise placement and hurried execution undermine the puzzle concept.

Back to Bed makes an immediate impression through impossible architecture, surreal imagery and a sleepwalker who cannot simply stop to consider his surroundings. Moving apples ahead of Bob turns route planning into a question of timing as well as space. Finding the route and successfully executing it do not always connect comfortably, however. The identified Vita test describes demanding placement with buttons and sticks, with much of the pressure coming from keeping Subob ahead of the walker rather than discovering a new relationship between puzzle elements. Thirty main levels and an additional difficulty mode provide goals, but repeated attempts also magnify input friction. Players drawn strongly to the dreamlike art may accept that compromise. Those seeking precise controls and a clear connection between deduction and feedback may find the journey more irritating than its imaginative setting suggests.

Strengths

  • Distinctive surreal environments
  • Guidance and timing give the premise potential

Weaknesses

  • Precision placement creates Vita control friction
  • Repeated rushing can overshadow deductions

Who it is for: Puzzle players willing to accept input limitations for distinctive surreal art.

Play notes: Independent judgment from official material and Matthew Pollesel’s September 2015 Vita test, not our own playtest. Exact date, model, patch and hours are unknown. Mobile complaints and grouped PS3/PS4 performance marketing are not Vita measurements.

Thirty main levels and the advertised Nightmare mode provide further goals. Repeated attempts have a clear purpose, though getting ahead of Bob recurs more persistently than varied deductions.

Moving apples redirects Bob, requiring Subob to prepare the route ahead of him. Planning and timing connect well in principle, but precise placement can overshadow the solution itself.

Colourful surreal environments and impossible architecture turn the route into a distinctive image. The dog-like subconscious and sleepwalker give the visual premise a memorable identity.

The identified Vita test describes difficult apple placement with buttons and sticks and friction in staying ahead of Bob. This directly impedes execution; other platforms or advertised frame rates do not resolve that evidence.
