About this game
Asterix _ Obelix is a Super Famicom action release centered on combat encounters, movement and immediate actions, and enemy and hazard responses. Stages build pressure through routes, enemy patterns, and changing objectives, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on campaign length or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Readable animation, hits, and hazards determine whether feedback remains dependable, while sprite animation, scrolling, color, and chip-based audio jointly carry readability and atmosphere. The main genre-specific friction is that period-specific collision rules, limited guidance, and repeated ground after failure can raise the entry barrier. In addition, password or battery saves, multiplayer accessories, manual dependence, regional language, and cartridge enhancement chips can affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this release and excludes emulator features, modern-port conveniences, and content from other platforms.

A colorful comic journey undermined by awkward close combat.
This SNES Asterix and Obelix adventure looks inviting, with bright comic scenery, layered backgrounds and varied country stages. Collecting stars unlocks bonus stages, giving the journey an enjoyable exploratory thread. Fighting is less welcoming. Sliding movement and short punches make careful positioning safer than rushing, while jumping does not change depth layers until landing. These interactions turn apparently simple encounters into awkward collisions. Cooperative play helps because a surviving partner allows the other player to continue nearby, but both must coordinate within the same scrolling screen. Country-end picture passwords preserve progress without offering particularly smooth entry. Attractive scenery carries much of the appeal, although stiff animation, repeated interiors and music that often misses the setting keep the adventure from feeling as breezy as it looks.
Strengths
- Attractive, layered comic scenery
- Country variety, bonus stages and helpful cooperative continuation
Weaknesses
- Sliding movement and depth-layer behavior complicate close combat
- Awkward passwords and restrictive shared-screen scrolling
Who it is for: Comic fans willing to learn cautious positioning, especially coordinated pairs.
Play notes: Original SNES release. Record the country-end picture password. Partners must stay together; easier difficulty does not remove terrain hazards.
