About this game

Annihilation is a Wii U shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and aiming and shooting. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while HD television output and the GamePad screen need to divide maps, status, touch input, and primary focus clearly. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and multiplayer service conditions can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include GamePad battery life and range, shifts between two screens, loading, performance, and retired online and Miiverse services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

5.4 / 10Wii U

Brief defense decisions within a very small Wii U package.

The Wii U eShop release of Annihilation turns arcade shooting into short base-defense rounds. Enemies descend from the top of the screen; letting them through damages the base, while collisions deplete the player own health. Kills finance automatic turrets, spike strips and special ammunition, so deciding when to save or spend has some bite as later waves fill the screen. There are only three principal stages. Random enemy order prevents every replay from being identical, and local multiplayer adds another way to attempt high scores, but neither supplies much new scenery or structure. The plain menus and backgrounds make the arenas easy to read without giving them much character. A direct Wii U account describes pausing to open the shop and using X and Y to switch ammunition. It does not measure frame rate or stability, so this assessment makes no such claim. The game works best as a brief defensive diversion and has little to sustain a longer arcade session.

Strengths

  • Dual health bars and purchases create wave decisions.

Weaknesses

  • Three stages and plain arenas limit variety.

Who it is for: Wii U players wanting a few short defense rounds.

Play notes: 2017 eShop build; performance and current access unverified.
