About this game

Age of Wonders 4 is a PC strategy game centered on battlefield assessment, unit or resource management, and turn or phase decisions. Missions add map constraints, new rules, and tougher opposition, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Maps, unit states, and action feedback determine whether complex situations remain readable, while resolution, graphics settings, frame rate, aspect ratio, audio, text scaling, and hardware performance need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that tutorial depth, dense menus, controller pointing, and long scenarios increase the learning curve. Platform conditions also include OS and hardware requirements, installation media, patches, drivers, DRM and launchers, key binding and controller support, save locations, mod compatibility, servers, and era-specific OS compatibility affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

8.7 / 10Windows PC

A richly replayable fantasy 4X with occasional repetition.

The PC version of Age of Wonders 4 turns the fantasy of designing a civilization into a sustained strategic engine. Physical form, social traits, magic tomes, unit enchantments and transformations keep changing what an empire can become. The direct PC review particularly values the way spell research feeds both empire development and tactical battles, while generated realms and Pantheon rewards make fresh campaigns tempting. There are limits: openings can feel repetitive, some tactical maps offer little cover, and players who enjoyed tuning individual units in Planetfall may miss that granular layer. Nested tooltips, an in-game codex and separate city production queues help explain an otherwise dense 4X. Its detailed worlds and visually distinct transformations reinforce the identity of player-made factions. This judgment concerns the reviewed PC design and interface. The reviewer lists a test machine, but the article is not a measured frame-rate benchmark; this score makes no claim about PS5 controller handling or console performance.

Strengths

  • Magic synergies, empire creation and helpful guidance.

Weaknesses

  • Some repetitive openings and plain tactical maps.

Who it is for: Strategy players who enjoy experimenting with builds.

Play notes: PC assessment only; PS5 handling and frame rate unverified.
