About this game

AFL 23 is a PlayStation 4 simulation game centered on competitive sport controls, system learning, and repeated adjustment and feedback. Schedules, changing values, or staged goals encourage repeated adjustment, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Interface clarity and state feedback matter more than spectacle, while HD output, HDR or PS4 Pro modes, HDD streaming, surround audio, and television-distance interfaces need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that explanations, dense menus, real-time systems, or accessory dependencies can add friction. Platform conditions also include HDD installs and loading, patch version, storage space, DualShock 4 battery life, PS Camera or PS VR requirements, visual modes, frame rate, and network services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

The June PS4 update supports more tactical matches, with clear content boundaries.

The June PS4 update makes AFL23's match loop more engaging through natural handballing, timed marking and defenders that respond to tactical changes. Tackles leave more opportunities to release possession, although some situations still demand a quick decision. Interchange, tactics and interactive replays broaden match-facing choices, while management career offers an extension without proving comprehensive career depth. State women's teams and player-stat editing were absent in this particular update. A transparent kicking graphic and persistent scoreboard and live-play information make matches easier to follow, and recognizable coach faces add sporting identity. The result is a usable, tactically interesting option for fans prepared to learn its timing, rather than an unqualified endorsement of a fully polished simulation.

Strengths

  • Timed marking and tactical positioning give possession meaningful choices.
  • Persistent match information and transparent kick prompts improve feedback.

Weaknesses

  • Roster and player-stat editing scope remained limited in the June sample.

Who it is for: Australian football fans willing to learn handball and marking timing and adjust tactics.

Play notes: Quality is bounded to the June25,2023 PS4 update; later patches and ProTeam are outside this review. Check the current version and required modes before purchasing.

Interchange, tactics and replay broaden match-facing choices; the dated roster/editing limitations keep career breadth from being a strong selling point.

Specific timed inputs and visible match feedback support usable play; rapid tackling still demands timely disposal, and the sample does not establish broad stability or polish.
