About this game
A carrier and its squadron give a rescued pilot a new role in a war between fictional nations. Before each sortie, the player chooses an aircraft and also selects machines for their wingmen. In the air, dogfights, attacks on facilities and defensive assignments call for different uses of that equipment. Progress through the aircraft tree expands the squad’s options. Simple wingman commands add another decision during a mission, alongside positioning the player’s own aircraft and choosing targets. Radio conversations and first-person scenes connect the individual sorties into a story about the people flying together.

ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE
Responsive flying and varied sorties carry a familiar formula with confidence.
The appeal starts with a clear relationship between input and spectacle: steering into position and choosing a target produce immediate, readable results. The campaign keeps that familiar activity engaging by changing what needs protection, what must be destroyed and how the squad can help. Selecting aircraft for allies and issuing simple commands adds decisions without overwhelming the act of flying. Its cinematic ambitions are less evenly successful. Character performances and radio exchanges give the squad personality, but the amount of names and changing loyalties can make the larger conflict harder to follow than the mission in front of the player. The aircraft tree also creates some unnecessary navigation friction. For someone seeking direct aerial action with a sense of participating in a larger squadron, the strengths remain persuasive.
Strengths
- Responsive flight and a campaign with changing objectives.
Weaknesses
- Dense story details and fiddly aircraft-tree navigation.
Who it is for: Players seeking accessible, dramatic aerial combat.
