About this game

99 Vidas is a PlayStation 4 fighting game centered on move inputs, offense-defense reads, and character matchups. Short bouts use character differences and rising difficulty for variety, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hit feedback, and readable arenas create match tension, while HD output, HDR or PS4 Pro modes, HDD streaming, surround audio, and television-distance interfaces need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that button mapping, move recognition, multiplayer accessories, and cpu behavior can affect balance. Platform conditions also include HDD installs and loading, patch version, storage space, DualShock 4 battery life, PS Camera or PS VR requirements, visual modes, frame rate, and network services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Accessible retro brawling with limited tactical range and uneven stages.

On PS4, 99Vidas makes its side-scrolling brawling easy to grasp. Punches, kicks, jumps and a resource-consuming screen attack are immediately readable, while between-stage shops, unlockable characters and local co-op give players reasons to return. A direct PS4 review finds the controls responsive, but the move set has relatively few useful branches and an especially strong jump kick can narrow the tactics further. The campaign is short, yet some individual stages linger longer than their ideas warrant. Presentation gives this homage a character of its own: colourful retro sprites, arcade-styled music, Brazilian street details and comic bosses stand out from its familiar inspirations. The 2017 PS4 test also reported co-op functioning well online at that time, but that is not evidence of current matchmaking or service availability. It is best for players seeking accessible old-school group brawling, particularly together on one console. Those wanting a deep combo system or consistently brisk level pacing may find it slight. The PS3 release is assessed separately rather than inheriting this PS4 judgment.

Strengths

  • Responsive controls, local co-op and distinctive retro style.

Weaknesses

  • Limited combo variety and some overlong stages.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy old-school brawlers and local co-op.

Play notes: 2017 online observations are not current service proof; PS3 is unscored here.
