Nintendo’s cartridge-based 3D console pairs an analog controller with four built-in controller ports for distinctive adventures and local multiplayer.

Nintendo 64 first arrived in Japan on June 23, 1996. It made three-dimensional movement and exploration central to Nintendo’s home-console games while continuing to use dedicated cartridges. Titles such as Super Mario 64 helped define the experience.
Four controller ports are built into the console for supported local multiplayer games. The distinctive three-pronged controller combines an analog stick, directional pad and C buttons, allowing different grips. Its rear socket accepts accessories such as the Rumble Pak or Controller Pak. A separate Expansion Pak fits inside the console to provide extra memory.
Check each game’s accessory requirements. Saves may reside on a cartridge or a Controller Pak, while Donkey Kong 64 and some other titles need an Expansion Pak for full operation. Regional cartridges, video signals and power supplies also require attention. Original controllers are wired; their features should not be confused with modern wireless reproductions.
